General dentistry can be compared to family practice in medicine. A general dentist is a primary care provider who focuses on your overall oral health. General dentists will care for patients of any age including the children, parents, and grandparents of a single family. If you have a dental condition which requires a specialist’s care, your general dentist will write the referral. General dentistry is the most common practice of dentistry in the United States today. A general dentist can work in private practice, government health services, the military, or other settings.
General dentistry is the form of education all dentists will go through. A Bachelor of Science degree is usually required before beginning a general dentistry program. Dental programs in general dentistry are four years and will cover the basics of anatomy, dental disease, oral health care, preventive care techniques, and technical skills. Depending on the program, dentists can graduate with either a degree as a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). There isn’t much of a difference between the degrees. Both are licensed to perform the same procedures.
A general dentist will offer a wide variety of services for oral health care. This includes services that go beyond the basics of preventive dentistry such as tooth cleaning and filling cavities. General dentists can perform tooth restoration procedures such as fitting dentures, crowns, bridges, veneers, and dental implants. Other procedures that fall under the general treatment umbrellas include the treatment of gum disease, applying protective sealants, root canals, and cosmetic surgery. Most general dentists dedicate their work to educating patients on issues like oral hygiene, tobacco use, nutrition, and other topics important to oral health.
If a general dentist has had additional training, they can perform a lot of different specialty procedures. An example of this would be sedation dentistry which uses special medications to calm anxiety about dental care. General dentists can perform specialized cosmetic procedures but will generally need to undergo extra training.
