Fight Like A Girl! Breast Cancer Awareness October 2018
At Totowa Dental Center we have had many personal experiences with our loved ones, patients and staff dealing with breast cancer. Some have fought hard and won the battle victoriously while others have also fought for their lives and tragically lost. There’s a CURE... and together we can not only help find it but just as importantly save the lives of those we love by raising awareness about prevention and early detection of this awful disease!
We Need Your Help! Our goal this month is to reach as many people as we can and share the following 10 things that may just save a life and we need your help! For every like or share this post receives on Facebook or Instagram we are going to donate $1.00 to breast cancer research up to $2000.00! Hey! We already went out and got the “BIG CHECK!” Now we can only humbly ask our follows, families and friends to help us help those we love!
10 Things To Know That Can Save Your Life!
- Your Family History- plays a role and can increase your risk of developing cancer. There are three genes, BRCA1, BRCA2, and PALB2, which can increase the possibility of breast and ovarian cancers when mutated. When these genes are passed down from one or both of your parents, your risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer increases significantly. So if you have a family history of these cancers please opt for genetic testing. It’s quite simple! It is done by examining your blood or saliva.
- You Might Not Even Know- You may have breast cancer and not even know it because you do not have any visible clues. Angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels within the breast tissue. It may be an indication of the body’s additional supply of blood aimed at pre-existing breast tumors. The best way of detecting the condition is through a thermography because unlike mammograms, this unique technique goes to the target under the surface and into the tissue.
- Mammograms- Getting a mammogram can help detect breast cancer early and increase the odds of successful treatment. Small doses of radiation are used to perform the specialized x-ray of the breasts and can produce images of the cancer two to three years before it can be physically detected. For an accurate reading, the breasts are pressed between the machine plates, and most women agree it is only an uncomfortable, rather than painful, procedure.
- There’s An App For Everything- If you’re a smartphone users you have no excuse for forgetting to check the signs and symptoms of breast cancer since an app can be downloaded for free. The app’s visual reminders include the best times to check your breasts, including in the shower and while applying lotion. It comes with quizzes which can be shared on social media to encourage your friends and to promote early detection. It is a simple and convenient tool for the tech savvy.
- Early Detection- One of the most critical tests for early detection is the Breast Self Exam (BSE). Visual clues can sometimes be obvious and include any of the following changes: Dimpling, puckering of the skin, or bulging of the breast tissue. Nipples can change in position or become inverted, a rash can develop, and soreness and swelling can occur. It is recommended to do the BSE early in a menstrual cycle and make notes so comparisons can be done monthly.

- Be Proactive- You know your body better than anyone, take a proactive approach to early detection can save your life. Getting regular checkups with your doctor is essential, as are clinical breast exams if you’re over forty. While doing self-exams, you can note any changes to discuss with your medical practitioner. If you’re over the age of fifty you’re at a highest risk, regardless of your age you should be attentive since cancer can hit at any age.
- A Little Exercise- You can reduce the risk of breast cancer through regular exercise. Studies have shown that you can reduce your risk of breast cancer by up to 30% through quality exercise. This doesn’t mean you have to join a gym and work out 7 day per week! Even a daily walk and active gardening for at least thirty to sixty minutes a day counts. Exercise daily to burns calories, which in turn reduce fat, where estrogen is stored. More fat means more storage space for estrogen. Paired with proper nutrition speeds up weight loss.
- Eating Better- There’s a lot of talk is generated about the benefits of proper nutrition, but it is also backed by science. Eating certain foods have cancer-fighting compounds, including broccoli, carrots, cabbage, pomegranates, and raspberries. It is important that you have a balance of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats, as opposed to a diet high in sugar and saturated fats. You should aim for a colorful plate by shopping the perimeters of your grocery store.
- Regular Sleep - is essential for overall health and helps in the prevention of breast cancer and other cancers. The quality of sleep you get is based on the level of melatonin in your body and researchers have found lower levels equate to growth of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer cells. If you’re not getting enough sleep try to reduce screen time before bed. I know! It’s hard not to watch TV or be on your cell phone in bed. Try leaving your phone charging in the kitchen and just GO TO SLEEP! You’ll thank me in the morning! Still having trouble? Try taking three milligrams of melatonin and say good bye to those sleepless nights.
- Vitamins- Part of your healthy diet should include all essential vitamin and mineral requirements are met. Vitamin D3 is important in the prevention of breast cancer and can be lacking in people with limited exposure to sunlight. Woman with breast cancer, together with low levels of D vitamins, reportedly have up to seventy-three percent higher risk of death than breast cancer patients with sufficient vitamin D levels. Magnesium and B Complex are also breast cancer fighters.
