Dental Implants Q & A

What is a dental implant?

Much like a natural tooth, dental implants have two parts to them. Where a natural tooth has a root which attaches it to the jaw, dental implants have a “root” which is a piece of metal made of titanium. A dental implant has a prosthetic tooth which is made to match your remaining, natural teeth. The dental implant will replace both the root and crown of one or more natural teeth.

Why do I need a dental implant?

Missing teeth can make it difficult to chew food, which may affect your overall nutrition. When teeth are missing it can also disrupt the alignment of any remaining teeth, as they can begin to shift over into the open spaces. The empty socket of a missing tooth can begin to trap leftover food particles. This increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. One of the main reasons people choose dental implants is to improve appearance. When you have one or more missing teeth, especially if they’re near the front of your mouth, it can cause a lopsided smile and discomfort with your appearance.

How is a dental implant attached?

First, the jaw bone must be strong and healthy enough to support the anchor for the implant. This can be assessed during an examination. If the jaw isn’t strong enough, you may need a bone graft, which will be a separate procedure. After the initial assessment, a socket will be created in the jaw bone where the dental implant will be placed. It will take about 3 months for the jaw bone and implant to heal completely and fuse together before the final prosthetic tooth is placed.

Am I a good candidate for a dental implant?

The first step to decide whether you’re a good candidate for a dental implant is to have a dental exam. If you're in good general health, a dental implant shouldn't be a problem. Some considerations that need to be taken into account are if you have diabetes or heart disease. If you have these conditions, there may need to be extra care taken before the procedure, so your dentist may recommend you see your family doctor. Another important factor is that your teeth be in good condition. Any fillings or gum problems should be dealt with before you have an implant.
