Invisalign® Q & A

Why do I need braces?

Braces are used to improve the alignment of the teeth, but the main reason to get braces is for oral health. When teeth are crooked, they tend to wear unevenly. Uneven wear will increase the risk of chipping or breaking a tooth. Also, when teeth are unbalanced they can cause discomfort when talking or chewing. If your teeth are crowded, it becomes more difficult to floss properly or to clean around the base of the tooth. This will increase the risk of developing gum disease.

What makes Invisalign® different?

Invisalign® is a popular alternative to traditional braces due to the clear, almost invisible plastic utilized. Teens especially prefer not having to deal with a “mouthful of metal.” Traditional braces involve wire brackets that are attached to the teeth and can’t be removed. Invisalign® is made of a clear, plastic device called an “aligner” which fits over the teeth. Another benefit to Invisalign® over traditional braces is that the Invisalign® aligner can be removed where conventional braces will remain on until the dentist removes them. This flexible option with Invisalign® allows you to eat foods like popcorn, hard candies, apples, or corn on the cob with no problems. Traditional braces make it more difficult to properly brush your teeth. With Invisalign® you can remove the aligner to floss and brush, ensuring that your teeth stay clean. You also may not need as many appointments with Invisalign® compared to conventional braces.

How do Invisalign braces work?

Your Invisalign® braces will be created on a 3D computer-generated system. First, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth which renders a mold. This mold, along with pictures of your teeth, are entered into special software on the computer. From there, the computer uses this information and designs a series of appliances called aligners that are custom-fitted to your mouth and teeth. Each of the aligners is meant to be worn progressively to move your teeth into their new position little by little. After a few weeks, you change to a new aligner until your teeth reach your desired look.
