Veneers Q & A

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are used as a covering on teeth to correct minor imperfections, irregularities, and any stains that may be visible. Veneers are custom fit and shaped to your specifications for a great fit. Totowa Dental Center offers patients both traditional porcelain veneers, or resin composite veneers. They also proudly offer Lumineers. These veneers provide just as much strength but in a thinner style of veneer which offers an even better appearance.

When are veneers used?

Veneers are usually placed when you have a tooth that is stained and bleaching isn’t effective. Dental veneers will cover the full tooth. The veneers are particularly effective against stains on the surface of the teeth that can’t be treated any other way. A veneer will also cover any noticeable gaps or spacing between your front teeth. They can also be effective for covering a tooth that is chipped or slightly crooked.

How many appointments will I need?

Although each case is different, most patients usually need up to three appointments for proper veneer fitting. The first appointment will be used to evaluate the condition of your teeth. Once this is done, a specific treatment plan will be developed. For the veneer to fit your teeth properly, they must but shaped and buffed. This will take place during the second appointment. The veneers will be fitted and attached to your teeth during the third appointment. It might be necessary for a follow-up appointment to be scheduled a few weeks later to check for any problems.

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are a different brand of veneer that are equally strong, but much thinner than traditional veneers. Because of the thinner product, less prep work is needed to fit them to your teeth. If you choose Lumineers, there is usually only two visits needed rather than the traditional three. The thin shell of Lumineers also affects the appearance of the veneer, giving a translucent appearance that looks more like a natural tooth.
